HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Darren Driscoll and junior Liz Wade set the early season paces for the Virginia Wesleyan College cross country teams with a pair of top 20 finishes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preview Meet hosted by Hampden-Sydney College on Friday.
Driscoll (Haymarket/Battlefield) finished the men's 8K race in a time of 27:54.60 to place 16th in a field of 106 runners. Wade (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) placed 11th in a field of 91 runners, finishing the women's 6K race in a time of 24:45.50, the fourth best time of her career.
Virginia Wesleyan finished seventh in the field of 10 teams in the women's competition, and the men placed eighth in a field of 11. Ironically, Christopher Newport University, a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, finished first in both races. Washington and Lee University took the runner-up spot in both races, while Guilford College was third among the men and Bridgewater College third among the women.
Senior Autumn Watson (Rocky Mount/Franklin County) helped the Marlin women with a 27th place finish in a time of 25:46.70, the fourth best of her career, and rookie Emily Latimer (Moyock, N.C./Currituck) got off to a good start with a time of 26:42.20. She placed 38th overall.
Another rookie fared well for the VWC men as Trevor Maloney (Houston, Del./Milford) placed 35th in a time of 29:23.20. He was the second runner to finish for the Marlins, and sophomore Andrew Werner (Chesapeake/Western Branch) was third in a time of 30:17.60. He placed 48th overall, with sophomore Glen Rose (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) close behind in 50th in a time of 30:39.30.
Virginia Wesleyan's runners will compete again on Friday, Sept. 20, at the North Carolina State Invitational.
