Guilford slips past Virginia Wesleyan women, 5-4
VIRGINIA BEACH --Virginia Wesleyan College Tennis Director Darryl Cummings had to be smiling after the completion of singles competition against Guilford College at the Everett Tennis Center on Friday.
Guilford jumped out to a 3-1 lead and appeared to be on the verge of adding to its lead at the remaining two flights. But, it never happened.
Virginia Wesleyan sophomore Mia Proctor (Arnod, Md./Broadneck) and rookieSydney Charity (Hampton/Hampton) stayed focused and fought back to win at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Proctor trailed 5-3 in the third set to Haley Andrews (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Charity was trying to wrap things up againt Luci Gordan (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day). Both Marlins came through impressively, as Proctor won 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 and Charity came back from a 6-3 opening set loss to dominate, 6-2, 6-0.
"At one point it looked like Guilford could have won the match after singles play," said Cummings. "But, Proctor and Charity did wonderful jobs keeping their hands in the fire and tying up the match 3-3 after singles. In doubles we came up a little short losing #3 in a tiebreaker. It was a terrific collegiate tennis match and I believe we will continue to improve our performances as the year goes on."
Guilford won two of the three doubles competitions to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference match overall, 5-4. The Marlins prevented a doubles sweep by winning at the No. 2 flight. Rookie Marissa Cifuentes (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and junior Hannah Rice (Glen Allen/J.R. Tucker) defeated Nora Porkosch (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) and Mara Stern (Austin, Texas/Westwood), 8-3.
The Marlins return to action on Saturday, March 8, at 11:30 a.m. hosting Randolph-Macon College in conference play. VWC will also take on Penn St.-Abington at 3 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Everett Tennis Center.
