VIRGINIA BEACH -- Competition improved in doubles for Virginia Wesleyan College's women's tennis team, but the Marlins were unable to get past Bridgewater College Eagles at the Everett Tennis Center.
Bridgewater, ranked No. 3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's preseason poll, posted a 9-0 win over the Marlins, who are ranked No. 4 among 12 teams in the same poll.
SophomoreMia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and rookie Sydney Charity (Hampton/Hampton) played closest to notching a win, as the duo dropped an 8-4 decison to Jessie Mitchell (Richmond/St. Gertrude) and Whitney Cash (Broadway/Broadway). Rookies Marisa Cifuentes (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and Lisa Nguyen (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) fell 8-2 at the No. 2 spot to Brittany Wilson (Lynchburg/Heritage) and Marla O'Bryan (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham), and sophomore Hannah Parent (Port Tobacco, Md./Indian Head-Henry E. Lackey) and junior Hannah Rice (Glen Allen/J.R. Tucker) dropped an 8-2 decision to Katie Gordon (Winchester/John Handley) and Maria Hawkins (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) at the No. 1 flight.
Bridgewater swept singles, where Parent, Cifuentes, and Nguyen recorded a point each at the No. 3, No. 3, and No. 6 flights, respectively.
Virginia Wesleyan will host Sweet Briar College in an ODAC match beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, at the Everett Tennis Center.
