Marlins take two of three on weekend road trip
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Three matches were decided by 5-0 scores and the Virginia Wesleyan College women's tennis team came out on top twice.
In an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) weekend hosted by Washington and Lee University, the Marlins fell to No. 15 ranked W&L, but bounced back to defeat Randolph-Macon College and Emory & Henry College. The Marlins have won four of their last five outings and are now 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC.
Washington and Lee (6-2) swept all three doubles matches and iced the win with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Virginia Wesleyan recovered well however, as the Marlins finished 6-0 in doubles against R-MC and E&H.
The rookie duo of Sara Yousif (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Manus Academy) and Victoria Ryherd (El Paso, Texas/Loretto Academy) improved to 4-1 overall at the No. 1 slot with an 8-3 win over R-MC's Angelina Sportelli (Mechanicsville/Lee-Davis) and Courtney Owens (Cupeper/Eastern View), and followed with an 8-2 victory over E&H's Alyssa Wingate (Independence/Grayson County) and Taylor Evans (Weber City/Gate City).
VWC rookies Hannah Parent (Port Tobacco, Md./Indian Head Lackey) and Victoria Torres (Pembroke Pines, Fla./West Broward) improved to 3-1 at No. 2 with wins over the Jackets and Wasps as well. They topped R-MC's Olayemisi Ogunshina (Baltimore/Wilde Lake) and Caty-Betz Holcomb (Lynchburg/E.C. Glass) 8-3 and E&H's Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn./Halls) and Emily Bolt (Independence/Grayson County) 8-0.
At No. 3, senior Stephanie Bittner (Westminsterd, Md./Francis Scott Key) combined with rookie Mia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) to win 8-2 over R-MC's Mackenzie Nunnally (Richmond/Goochland) and Morgan Parkes (Denton, Md./North Caroline), and 8-3 over Emory & Henry's Sheyanne Cleveland (Rural Retreat/Rural Retrea) and Casey Blackburn (Richmond/James River). The Marlin duo is now 5-3 overall.
VWC's dominance in doubles helped close out the matches early as only two singles victories were needed for the match decisions. Yousif and Ryherd were the only Marlins to finish their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, both with victories. Yousif won 6-1, 6-3 over R-MC's Sportelli and 6-1, 6-0 over E&H's Wingate. Ryherd also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 over the Jackets' Owens and 6-0, 6-1 over the Wasps' Evans.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition for its spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, beginning on Monday, March 25. The Marlins will face Ohio's Oberlin College (7-4) at 3 p.m. and Minnesota's St. Olaf College (3-2) at 3 p.m. On Tuesday, March 26, VWC takes on New York's Oneonta State University (8-5) at 8:30 a.m., and on Wednesday, March 27, the Marlins face Minnesota's St. Thomas University (6-0) at 3 p.m.
