GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Virginia Wesleyan College rookies Lauren Brooker and Mia Proctor opened the 2013 portion of the Marlins' tennis schedule with victories in singles and doubles against the host Quakers of Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition.
Virginia Wesleyan won 6-3 overall on the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael Centennial Class Courts, led by impressive efforts at No. 1 and No. 3 singles and doubles. Brooker (Wake Forest, N.C./Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons)teamed with rookie Sara Yousif (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Manus Academy) to roll to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and senior Stephanie Bittner (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) won by the same score at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Brooker posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Haley Andrews (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Proctor won 6-1, 6-2 over Kim Kliemer (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School). Their victories were part of a top four sweep by the Marlins in singles, as rookie Tori Ryherd (El Paso, Texas/Loretto Academy) defeated Natalie Sutton (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot and Victoria Torres (Pembroke Pines, Fla./West Broward) won 6-4 2-6, 10-6 over Allie Guy (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School).
VWC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 in a pair of road matches. The Marlins will face perennial power University of Mary Washington on Saturday and undefeated College of New Jersey on Saturday. TCNJ rolled through the fall with a 6-0 record, all 9-0 shutouts.
