VWC Women's Tennis Goes 2-1 During Weekend Matches

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Virginia Wesleyan Women's tennis team notched two wins and one loss on a rainy weekend at the Duchossois Tennis Center in Lexington, VA. The weekend's contest, moved indoors due to weather conditions, featured four different schools from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Marlins came out Friday night against the #8 nationally ranked Generals of Washington and Lee and dropped a tough contest against a talented squad. The newly crowned indoor national champions wasted no time sweeping doubles before felling the marlins in singles to clinch the decision at 5-0.

The Lady Marlins remained diligent as they came back to sweep Saturdays ODAC conference foes Randolph Macon and Emory and Henry. The Marlins came out with a strong doubles effort against Randolph-Macon by sweeping doubles in dominant fashion highlighted by a 8-1 performance at #1 Doubles from Cay Gee(Parkton, MD/Hereford) and Katelynn Duncan (Lynchburg, VA/Holy Cross Regional Catholic).  Gee and Duncan did not stop there as they concluded their dominance by winning the final two points in singles to clinch the decision against the Yellow jackets of Randolph-Macon 5-0. Gee won her match 6-1, 6-1 and Duncan won 6-1, 6-3 respectively.

In the Afternoon match, the VWC Women's tennis team would come back to complete Saturday's conference sweep with a 5-1 decision over the Wasps of Emory and Henry.  For the second time that day, the marlins swept doubles with a strong performance at #3 doubles by Jordan Hill (Virginia Beach, Va/First Colonial) and Lauren Ragland (Virginia Beach, VA/ Tallwood). Hill and Ragland took an 8-1 decision over the Wasps. The Marlins would fight a tougher battle in singles where Stephanie Bittner (West Minster, MD/ Francis Scott Key) would ultimately clinch the victory for Virginia Wesleyan with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Emily Bolt(Independence, VA/Grayson County HS) of Emory and Henry.

The Marlins return to competition next weekend when they face Hood College in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday March 9th at 11:00 am, then return home to face conference foe Guilford College on Saturday March 10th at 2:00 pm at the Everett Tennis Center.
