VIRGINIA BEACH -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship season is here.
While Virginia Wesleyan College's cross country teams compete for their title on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Eastern Mennonite University, the Marlins' men's and women's soccer teams will take their first steps toward ODAC crowns in quarterfinal tournament action, also on Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY -- Championship competition will be held at Peakview Elementary School and Burtner Farm in Penn Laird, Virginia. The men's 8K race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 6K race at 12 p.m. Full results will be posted at the following website:
MEN'S SOCCER -- The Marlins open ODAC tournament play on the road, at Lynchburg College at 7 p.m. VWC dropped a 1-0 decision to the Hornets on Saturday, but hope to avenge the loss in tournament play. Lynchburg, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, enters the game with a 7-6-4 record overall and a 6-1-4 ODAC mark, while VWC, the No. 6 seed, is 7-9-1 and 6-5. The game will feature four of the ODAC's top goal scorers in VWC'sTravis Walke (Virginia Beach/Landstown) and LC's Luke Moore (Richmond/Heritage), who have both scored eight goals, and VWC's Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County) and Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian), who have scored seven and six goals, respectively. Hornet goalie Michael Releford (Blacksburg/Blacksbur) ranks No. 2 in goals against average in the league and VWC rookie Jake Burtch (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) ranks No. 9. WOMEN'S SOCCER -- VWC's women, who produced the program's first undefeated regular season in history, earned the home field advantage throughout the ODAC tournament. The No. 1 seeded Marlins (17-0-1, 11-0-1) will host the Wasps (6-10, 5-7) of Emory & Henry College at 12 noon on Saturday on Foster Field at the Trinder Center. VWC defeated E&H 5-1 in the regular season, led by senior Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with two goals and an assist and senior Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) with a goal and two assists. While Ingargiola has scored 11 goals to date, Edelman has put in 10, along with a team-high 10 assists. Emily Belanger (Tampa, Fla./Paul R. Wharton) and Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C./Hickory) lead E&H with five and four goals, respectively. VWC goalie Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) owns a 0.44 goals against average, which ranks No. 2 in the ODAC. The game will be available through live stats and live video webcast.
