ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- In the first game after recording a milestone victory for their head coach Jeff Bowers, the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team made history.
With 2-0 regular-season, non-conference finale victory at St. Mary's College, the 2012 Marlins became the first VWC women's soccer team in the program's 29 year history to post an undefeated season. The victory improved VWC's record to 17-0-1, topping three previous seasons of just two losses each in 2003, 2005, and 2007.
The win over the host Seahawks for the undefeated regular season completed VWC's recent undefeated finish in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Marlins capped that with a 4-1 win over Roanoke College, marking the 200th career win for Bowers.
St. Mary's (5-9-1) did not make it easy however, holding the Marlins scoreless throughout the first half.
Four minutes after that it was Edelman's turn to hit the net, scoring off an assist from senior Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) to give VWC the 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot St. Mary's 9-0 in the first half and finished with a 19-2 advantage in shots. The Marlins also rolled up a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including 7-0 in the second half.
Junior goalie Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) recorded one save for the Marlins and Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) had 10 for St. Mary's.
Virginia Wesleyan will begin its post-season play on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship tournament. The Marlins, seeded No. 1 in the event, will hold the home field advantage throughout the tournament. Pairings for the tournament will be released later this week.
