Scoreless tie for Marlins, Generals in Lexington
LEXINGTON, Va. -- A meeting between long time rivals Virginia Wesleyan College and Washington & Lee University on Wednesday ended the same way it started...with no score.
The Marlins and Generals battled through 90 minutes of regulation competition and two 10 minute overtime periods without either team scoring a goal in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown at W&L's Watt Field.
While VWC's record moved to 8-3-3 overall and to 6-1-1 in the league, Washington & Lee's marks changed to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the ODAC.
Despite playing in wet conditions on a day hit with scattered rain showers, Virginia Wesleyan dominated the contest, out-shooting the Generals 18-2. The Marlins also finished with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Bethany Bayles (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) protected the goal for VWC throughout the game en route to recording her first shutout of the season. Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) guarded the goal for the Generals and produced five saves.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Oct. 16, playing at Emory, Va. against Emory & Henry College's Wasps in an ODAC game beginning at 1:30 p.m.
