Strong start and finish not enough for VWC in loss at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. -- A strong beginning was matched by a strong finish for the Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition at Roanoke College.

But, in between that start and finish was a steady offensive showing by the host Maroons who posted a 21-10 victory.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-10, 3-5) opened the competition with a pair of goals by Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Brooke Cabeceiras (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) in the first four minutes.  Another goal by rookie Summer Moore (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) at 23:05 gave the Marlins a 3-1 lead.  Roanoke answered with two goals to tie, but saw VWC senior Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) score unassisted to put the Marlins in front 4-3 with 13:19 remaining in the first half.

That would be the last lead of the game for Virginia Wesleyan however, as Roanoke (8-6, 7-1) answered with five straight goals to open up an 8-4 lead.  VWC pulled within 8-5 before halftime however, after Williams scored on a free position shot.

Roanoke scored the first four goals of the second half to pad its lead and pulled away with a six-goal surge that gave the Maroons an 18-6 lead with 15:55 remaining to be played.

Virginia Wesleyan outscored Roanoke 4-3 to close the game.

Williams led Virginia Wesleyan with three goals, followed by Salyers and Moore with two each.  Rosie Kinsley (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Kathleen Wagner (Lexington/Rock Bridge) led Roanoke with four goals each.

Rookie Madison Carroll (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) recorded 12 saves for the Marlins in goal.  Lauren Curtin (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) had six saves for Roanoke.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, April 17, at Lynchburg College at 6:30 p.m.
