Salyers sparks Virginia Wesleyan to win over Hollins

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the first 15 minutes of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game against Hollins University and proceeded to a 19-2 victory on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Senior Nikki Saylers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored four goals to lead nine Marlins who recorded at least one goal each.  Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Candace Carey (Charlottesville/Albemarle) scored three goals each.  Salyers also recorded three assists and Williams and Kelly Jacobson (Nokesville/Brentsville) finished with two each.

Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor School) and Chanci Wright (Eden, Texas/Eden) scored a goal each for Hollins (1-9, 0-7).

Virginia Wesleyan (4-8, 3-3) led 12-1 at halftime.

The Marlins finished with advantages in shots (34-3), ground balls (26-10), and draw control wins (18-5).  Rookie Chloe Weinmann (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos), Williams and Carey led VWC with four draw wins each. Jacobson finished with a game-high six ground balls.

Sophomore Catie Amasia (Fallston, Md./Fallston) started in goal for the Marlins and recorded one save in the first 30 minutes.  Rookie Olivia Birmingham (Manassas/Osbourn) protected the net for the Marlins in the second half.

Corrine Nicholson (Takoma Park, Md./Northwood) recorded 11 saves for Hollins.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, April 10, hosting Randolph-Macon College in and ODAC game beginning at 4 p.m.
