No. 19 Christopher Newport runs past Virginia Wesleyan
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taylor Harding scored early for Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse team on Wednesday, but the Marlins could not keep scoring pace with 19th-ranked Chirstopher Newport University.
The host Captains scored the first three goals of the game before Harding (Norfolk/Norfolk Collegiate)put the Marlins on the scoreboard. But, CNU reeled off the next 10 goals of the first half en route to a 20-5 non-conference victory.
Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), Stacey Sank (Elmira, N.Y./Iroquois Central), Kelly Jacobson (Nokesville/Brentsville) and Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored a goal each for VWC (1-4).
Christopher Newport sparked its offense by winning 18 of 27 draw controls. The Marlins came back in the second half to out-draw the Captains 7-4.
Rookie goalie Madison Carroll (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) recorded eight saves for VWC in 41 minutes in goal. Catie Amasia (Fallston, Md./Fallston) finished the game for the Marlins and produced one save.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, March 16, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Washington and Lee University in Lexington. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
