VIRGINIA BEACH —Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse team posted a 19-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over rival Hollins University Friday on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
Thirteen different Marlins scored in an offensive explosion that out-shot the Green 26-5.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out 1-0 within the first minute on a goal from Nikki Salyers (Severna Park Md./Severna Park), assisted by Marlin standout Natalie Belva (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty). The Marlins would then score seven unanswered goals, highlighted by three from Mari Carmichael (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale). The Marlins closed the half leading 13-1.
The second half did not change momentum as the Marlins' high octane offense capped off six more goals to close out the game 19-2 with contributions from Kaitlyn Dozier (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and Aofie Branco (Chesapeaker, Va./Grassfield) off of a free position shot. Hollins' lone goals were scored by Jacqui Sommerman(Dallas, Tx./Highland Park) in the first half and Chanci Wright(Eden, Tx./Eden) in the second half.
The Marlins also had an advantage on groundballs with a dominating margin of 17-9 and only committed only four turnovers compared to their opponent's 10.
The win moves the Marlins Women's Lacrosse team to 5-8 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC, and marks their second consecutive conference win.
The Virginia Wesleyan team is next scheduled to play on a road trip against ODAC foes, the Vixens of Sweet Briar College on Saturday April 7, in Sweet Briar, VA. The contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
