Washington "D" puts the clamps on VWC
VIRGINIA BEACH --Washington College allowed just two goals in the first half, carrying the Shorewomen to a 13-8 non-conference victory over host Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins..
VWC (2-5) started off with a goal from junior Mari Carmichael (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) about a minute and a half into the game. But ,Washington College fired back with nine unanswered goals.
Washington (3-1) reeled off three quick goals and continued to find the back of the net as they put up 6 more goals, led by Carly Eisenbrandt with three. Washington held the Marlins scoreless until junior Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) fed Courtney Shelton (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) a quick pass off of a free position shot with 5:09 remaining.
The Marlins fired back and scored the first three goals of the second half from Salyers,Jenn Cathcart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) and rookie Candace Carey (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) to bring the score within four.
Washington was unable to put another goal on the board until 16:28 into the second half, as the Marlins edged out Washington 6-4 in the second half with unassisted goals from Salyers, freshman Carla Williams (Magnolia, De./Caesar Rodney), and Natalie Belva (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) , but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback. Salyers finished with two goals and Shelton compiled two assists as the Marlins saw a balanced offense with eight goal scorers and nine total point producers,
Washington was led by Carly Eisenbrandt with three goals and three assists, Corinne Ziccardi and Rachel Bartee, each with three goals.
Salyers led VWC with a pair of goals
Senior goalie Michelle Mace (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge Forest Park) recorded four saves for VWC.
The Marlins will take on Western New England Tuesday, March 20th in Clermont, Florida, as part of a two game spring break trip.
