Ushinski becomes Associate Head Coach for Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A familiar coach will have a new title with the Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball program beginning with the 2014-15 season.

Andrea Ushinski, who has helped the Marlins as the assistant coach for the past four seasons, has been promoted.  She will now be the Associate Head Coach, working with head coach Stephany Dunmyer, who will begin her 12th season in the fall.

"This promotion was the natural next step for Andrea as she continues her coaching career," said Dunmyer. "Having staff members who are loyal and who truly understand what the program represents is so important, and I could not have a better coach alongside me than Andrea.  Her commitment to the Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball program has been unwavering since the moment she walked on campus in the fall of 2005 as a student-athlete.  Andrea is involved in every aspect of our program, and she is truly one of the best young coaches in the profession right now.  There is no question in my mind that she is ready to be a head coach, so the promotion just made sense."

Ushinski, who graduated from VWC in 2009 with a degree in recreation and leisure studies, was a four-year letterwinner in women's basketball under Dunmyer. She was selected as team captain her junior and senior seasons and was 2007 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honoree.

A part of a senior class that played in two ODAC title games, Ushinski was the second leading scorer and rebounder for the Marlins as a senior, averaging 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.  She ranked third for the Marlins in rebounding as a junior and was part of a defensive effort that set a VWC record by surrendering only 52.9 ponts per game.

Prior to returning to VWC as part of the women's basketball staff, Ushinski began her coaching career as the assistant women's coach at Lynchburg College.  During the summer months she has coached at numerous camps, including the University of Virginia camp.
