Marlins Win Multiple Events at CNU Quad
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College track and field teams competed at the CNU Quad on Friday evening, posting impressive performances in multiple events.
Jada Philson finished in third place for the women's indoor track and field team with a time of 8.44 in the 60 meter dash. She was followed by Jayla Cross, who finished in third in the 200 meter with a time of 27.90. Cross also competed in the 400 meter, running a 1:05.46 to finish in fourth.
The 3,000 meter run saw a Marlin break the tape in first place as Emily Latimer crossed in 11:55.03, a full 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Mary Washington.
Rolonda Taylor captured another title for the Marlins, winning the triple jump with a distance of 33' 4.5", over four inches farther than the second place competitor.
Michelle Yates anchored the throwers with a third place finish in the shot put, heaving the weight a distance of 36' 3". She finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 39' 6.5".
The men also saw some impressive performances as Keyontae Norfleet finished fourth in the 60 meter dash (7.20) while Curtis Dudley was fifth with a time of 7.24. Norfleet placed third in the 200m race, finishing with a time of 23.28.
The men's indoor track team joined the women with an event victory, coming in the 400 meter. Trey White won the event with a time of 50.94, less than a tenth of a second ahead of the second place runner from Christopher Newport.
The 800m run featured Marlins in the top three positions as Gavin Fry (2:03.26), Dustin Ogburn (2:10.34), and Karim Dunn (2:14.23) rounded out the top three positions. Michael Ward followed the lead of his other distance runners, winning the one mile run with a time of 5:02.58.
Virginia Wesleyan showed why it perennially has one of the top relay teams in the conference, winning the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:29.40 as Norfleet, Fry, Dunn, and White all ran legs in the victory.
The Marlins will compete again at the Captains Invitational on January 20-21.
