NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College track and field teams sent a few select athletes to compete in specific events at the New Captains Classic & Combined held by Christopher Newport University.

The women's team sent Michelle Yates and Nikki Burns to Newport News to try to improve on some already impressive marks in advance of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship meet.

The men also sent two athletes on Friday as Trevor Maloney competed in the 5,000m and Parker Pearman threw the javelin.

Yates threw the hammer and the javelin on the day, posting a mark of 105' 1" in the hammer, upping her previous best this season by seven inches while leaving her just outside of the top 12 ODAC distances. She followed it up with a heave of 62' 5" in the javelin throw.

Burns also competed in the javelin, looking to extend her ODAC-best mark of 132' 1". She did not reach that distance, but still threw 129' 5" which is the third-best score in the ODAC this year.

Maloney made a presence on the conference scene, running his 5,000m in 15:41.77, more than 20 seconds better than his previous top time from last year. His tape-breaking time is the 14th best in the league this season.

Pearman also set a personal best, throwing the javelin 132' 6", besting his previous mark of 129' 9". His distance further entrenches himself in the 9th spot in the ODAC standings, 16 inches ahead of 10th place.
