VIRGINIA BEACH -- A match-up between the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship teams resulted in a sweep by the defending champions.
Virginia Wesleyan (21-9, 10-1 ODAC) rolled to an 11-1 victory over Randolph College's WildCats in the first game and posted a 5-0 shutout in the second game to complete the sweep.
Sophomore MacKenzie Creech (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) pitched the first five innings of the shutout and gave up just two hits. She struck out three batters. Sophomore Lindsay Izana (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) finished the game and allowed just two hits in two innings. VWC's pitchers faced only 25 batters in the game.
Tori Higginbotham (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) connected for a triple andJaclyn Quinn (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Andrea Shannon (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) ripped a double each. Brianna Bertovich, Quinn and Shannon all had two hits each in the game.
The Marlins scored a solo run in each of the first three innings and opened the gap with a two-run fourth, which included Higginbotham's triple.
In the first game, the Marlins started scoring early, putting up four runs in the first inning, wiping out a 1-0 lead by Randolph. The Marlins stretched the lead to 6-1 and put the game away with a five-run fourth inning. VWC belted six hits in the inning, including a Izana RBI double and a Bertovich single for two RBI.
Overall, the Marlins out-hit the 'Cats 13-2 in the first game, led by Higginbotham and Quinn with a double and single each. Heather Bishop (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) and Bertovich added two hits each.
Rookie Kristina Karagiorgis (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) pitched the distance for the Marlins, facing 20 batters in just five innings. She struck out five, walked four and gave up two hits and one earned run.
Jessica Sanabria (Burgaw, N.C./Pender) pitched for Randolph in the opener. She fanned two, walked four and gave up 13 hits and four walks. Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) and Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) both saw time in the circle in the second game, combining to strike out three, walk one, and allow nine hits and four earned runs.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, April 15, hosting Lynchburg College's Hornets in an ODAC twinbill starting at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Marlins.
