SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Guilford College put the pressure on Virginia Wesleyan College by winning two of three doubles matches during Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinal match at Sweet Briar College.
An intense 8-6 victory by the Marlins' No. 1 duo of sophomore Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) and rookie Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C./Homeschooled) over Turner Votipka (Nashville, N.C./Nash Central) and Erik Meiler (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) stopped a Quaker sweep.
But, Virginia Wesleyan (15-4) bounced back impressively in singles and won four of six flights to take a 5-2 victory and advance to Sunday's ODAC championship match against Washington and Lee University's Generals (16-4) at 1 p.m. at Sweet Briar. It will mark VWC's first title match since the league adopted team competition in title play since 2007. WLU has won six of the seven title matches played to date.
Wilson and Downing saw all of their action on Saturday in the doubles, as their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 were unfinished. Their teammates helped wrap up the victory, winning at every flight in straight sets.
Sophomore Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Homeschooled) extended his team-leading winning streak to nine in a row with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Aaron Smedley (West Chicago, Ill./Barlett) at No. 4. He improved to 7-0 at the flight and to 13-5 overall.
Sophomore Spencer Bullock (Lorton/South County) won 6-4, 6-4 over Trevor Cox (Chape Hill, N.C./Northwood) at No. 2, sophomore Tyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School) defeated Mason Church (San Diego, Calif./Bishops School) 6-2, 6-2 and No. 5, and rookie Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore/Towson) won 6-0, 6-3 over Blake Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) at No. 6.
