VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sophomores Graham Wilson and Drew Tomajczyk extended current winning streaks against Christopher Newport University on Sunday in the regular-season finale, but the Captains from Newport News emerged with the team win in a showdown between regionally-ranked teams.
CNU, ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic South region, posted wins in four of the six singles flights to post a hard-fought 6-3 victory at VWC's Everett Tennis Center, snapping the host Marlins' seven-match winning streak. Virginia Wesleyan entered the match ranked No. 17 in the region.
Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) helped prevent a CNU sweep in singles by winning at the No. 1 spot in an impressive comeback. The Captains' Chiraag Shetty (Yorktown/Tabb) opened with a 6-0 victory, only to see Wilson take a 6-3 decision in the second set, before dominating the third set for a 6-0 decider. It was Wilson's third straight win and seventh in the last eight outings. He is now 13-4 overall.
Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Homeschooled) needed only two sets to post a win at No. 4 against Joona Rahko (Oulu, Finland/Karjasita). He opened with a 6-1 first-set win and then held off Rahko 6-3 in the second. Tomajczyk won for the eight straight time and improved his season record to 12-5.
Tomajczyk was the only two-time VWC winner against the Captains as he teamed with rookie Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) to win at No. 3 doubles. The duo improved to a 4-1 after defeating Jake Smith (Alexandria/Mount Vernon) and Lloyd Luck (Charlottesville/Covenant), 8-2. It was the third consecutive win for the VWC tandem.
One of the most intense matches of the day went to CNU as Joey Manilla (Greenwood/Western Albemarle) and Shetty survived for 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles over rookie Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C./Homeschooled) and Wilson. It was only the fourth loss of the season for the VWC duo, which owns a team-leading 12-4 record.
Downing was also involved in a three-set battle in singles against Steven Boslet (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) at the No. 2 flight. After falling 6-4 in the opening set, Downing evened the score with a 6-3 second-set win. But, Boslet had a little more remaining in his game in the third set and posted a 6-2 win for the overall decision. It was the first loss in 10 matches for Downing, who is now 13-3 overall.
In women's competition on Sunday, Christopher Newport posted a 9-0 victory. While the Captains improved to 10-10 overall, the Marlins ended the regular season with 4-15 record.
