SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Early season success by the Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team has been noticed.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has released its regional rankings and the Marlins are ranked No. 19 among the top 20 teams in the Atlantic South region.
"The men's team has been able to win some tough conference matches allowing the program to enter the ITA Atlantic South rankings," said VWC Tennis Director Darryl Cummings. "Graham (Wilson) contines to demonstrate that he is one of the top players in the region. Our region is filled with several nationally ranked programs and this accomplishment is part of the program continuing to create tradition."
Virginia Wesleyan is currently 6-3 overall with two of the losses to the University of Mary Washington and Washington and Lee University, ranked No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the region. VWC's victories include a 5-4 win over Maryland's Washington College, which is currently ranked No. 20. The Marlins will compete against No. 8 Christopher Newport University, No. 11 Methodist University, and No. 17 Bridgewater College in April.
VWC sophomore Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) is also ranked, owning the No. 20 spot among the top 25 singles players in the region. Wilson competes at the No. 1 flight for the Marlins and is currently 6-3 overall.
The Marlins return to competition on Friday, March 28, hosting Division I University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at 2 p.m. at the Everett Center.
