Marlins improve to 6-3 during spring break matches

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A tough slate of week-long competition produced mixed results for Virginia Wesleyan College's men's and women's tennis teams during the 2014 spring break.

The Marlin men finished 2-2 overall, sandwiching losses to No. 17 University of Mary Washington and Ohio's Otterbein University around solid wins over Roanoke College and Illinois' Knox College.  The women faced Roanoke, New York's New Platz University, Oregon's George Fox University, and Otterbein, and dropped 9-0 decisions in all four.

Sophomore Tyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School) and rookies Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C.) and Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) all won three matches each to help the Marlins to improve to 6-3 overall.

Chang improved to 7-2 individually, and to 6-2 at the No. 5 flight.  He has won three straight matches and seven of his last eight.  Chang's only losses have been to players from NO. 22 Washington and Lee University and No. 17 Mary Washington.  His last three victories have all been in straight sets.

Downing has won three in a row and six of his last seven at the No. 2 singles spot, where he is now 6-2 overall.  He has teamed with sophomore Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) to produce a 5-3 mark at No. 1 doubles.

Like his teammates, Kelleher also closed the spring trip with a three-match winning streak, all at the No. 6 flight. He is 4-2 at the flight and has won five of his last seven matches overall.

Wilson, who competes at the No. 1 singles flight for VWC, finished 2-2 on the trip and is now 6-3 overall.

Sophomore Mia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) turned in one of the top efforts for the VWC women, forcing a three-set match against New Paltz.  She lost the opener 6-2, but battled back to win 6-4 in the second.  The third set was a thriller, but New Paltz' Olivia Ammariti (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) pulled it out 10-8.

Virginia Wesleyan's teams compete again on Friday, March 28, hosting Division I University of Maryland-Eastern Short at 2 p.m. at the Everett Tennis Center.
