VIRGINIA BEACH -- Rookie Graham Wilson posted a shutout victory at No. 1 singles on Saturday to highlight an impressive 7-2 win over Roanoke College at the Everett Tennis Center.
While VWC improved to 4-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, and 8-10 overall, the loss was only the second for Roanoke in the league. The Maroons are now 5-2 in the ODAC and 9-4 overall.
Wilson (Newport News/Menchville)won 6-0, 6-0 over Matt Kessler (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) for his fourth straight win. He is now 6-1 in ODAC play at the No. 1 flight, 15-3 at No. 1 overall, and 17-5 in all competition. His 17 wins tie the fifth highest victory total in VWC history, set originally in 1992 by four Marlins and tied in 2004 and 2006.
Wilson's win was one of four for the Marlins in singles, all in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-4 decision for rookie Tyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School) over Ian Webster (Fredericksburg/James Monroe) at the No. 4 flight. Chang is now 7-7 overall.
Virginia Wesleyan took the early lead in the match by sweeping doubles. Rookie Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Home schooled)and Wilson teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1, and rookie Lawrence Hunter (Fredericksburg/Chancellor) and Chang combined for a thrilling 8-6 decision at No. 2. Rookies Adam Owen (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) and Spencer Bullock (Lorton/South County) rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3. Tomajczyk and Wilson improved to 13-5 overall, and to 6-1 in the ODAC, and Chang and Hunter improved to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the league.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, April 13, traveling to Bridgewater, Virginia, to face the Eagles of Bridgewater College in ODAC play beginning at 2 p.m.
