VIRGINIA BEACH -- Senior Day proved to be bitter-sweet for Virginia Wesleyan College's tennis teams as the Marlins dropped a pair of tough Old Dominion Athletic Conference matches to the Eagles of Bridgewater College.
The Marlins' Brian Luke(Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) took the Eagles standout Peter Hawkins(Silver Springs, Md./Springbrook) to three sets before falling in a super tie-breaker for the third set 6-4, 3-6, 6-10. However it was senior Darrell Fountain(Toano, Va./Lafayette) who earned the Marlins their only point and Senior Day victory with a three set victory over Bridgewater's Drew Hubble(Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(9-7). BC posted an 8-1 win.
Virginia Wesleyan's women's team dropped their match 9-0. Junior Katelynn Duncan (Lynchburg, Va./Holy Cross Regional Catholic) pushed her opponent Emily Schweitzer(Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) to the limit before succumbing 6-3, 7-5.
The Virginia Wesleyan College men's team returns to action when they face Washington and Lee University in the first round of the Old Dominion Conference Tournament next Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m.. The women are eliminated from the ODAC tournament and have completed their regular season schedule.
MEN -- VWC 7, Randolph 2
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A must win situation is not unfamiliar for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team.
By defeating the WildCats of Randolph College, VWC not only got the win, but also qualified for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship with a 7-2 decision.
Doubles was almost a cloned performance as all three teams jumped out ahead 3-0 with an 8-3 victory at all three positions.
Singles would prove more competitive despite the Marlins winning four of the six singles matches to take the match 7-2. The win was highlighted by a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #1 singles by Brian Luke (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) over Daniil Lyalko.
The Marlins return to action on Sunday, April 15, when they face the Eagles of Bridgewater College at the Everett Tennis Center in Virginia Beach at 1 p.m. It marks the last regular season match.
WOMEN -- Sweet Briar 8, VWC 1; Randolph 7, VWC 2
Injury has plagued the Virginia Wesleyan College women's tennis team all year and continue to plague the Marlins who dropped two more conference matches this weekend. The Marlins dropped an 8-1 decision to the Vixens of Sweet Briar College at the Everett Tennis Center in Virginia Beach on Friday, April 13.
The Marlins' only win would come by the hands of Stephanie Bittner (West Minster, Md./Francis Scott Key) in a straight set victory at #3 singles 6-2, 6-4.
On Saturday, April 14, the women's team traveled to visit the Wildcats of Randolph in Lynchburg, Va. where they fell 7-2. The Marlins only victories were recorded by Katelynn Duncan (Lynchburg, Va./Holy Cross Regional Catholic) at #2 singles in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 and Rachel Calkins(Pauma Valley, Calif./Temecula Great Oak) at #5 singles 6-4, 6-3.
