VIRGINIA BEACH – Virginia Wesleyan College's men's Tennis team dropped a tough 8-1 non-conference contest to their cross-water rivals, the Captains of Christopher Newport University at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Marlins could not find a strong rhythm in doubles, dropping all three matches, giving The Captains a 3-0 lead. Brian Luke (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and Ryan Sadinsk i(Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) pushed hard to rally from a 6-3 deficit to square the match at 6-6 all before succumbing to an 8-6 decision to Joey Manilla (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albermarle) and Gian Heyer (Lugano, Switzerland/SCC Bellinzona) from CNU.
Singles would not fare much different as Christopher Newport clinched the match decision at #2 singles and #3 singles. Virginia Wesleyan's solo win came at the hands of Donnie Greathouse (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in a third set tie-breaker 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 over Sky Masand(Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) of Christopher Newport.
The loss brings the Marlins to 8-9 overall. CNU improves to 10-9.
The Marlins return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face the wildcats of Randolph College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition. Match time is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
