State and region honors include VWC's Cornell and Fisher

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Brian Cornell and Kyle Fisher were two of the most consistent contributors to the success of the 2013 Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team and their efforts have earned them prestigious postseason awards.

Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County), a senior midfielder, has been named an All-South Atlantic Region first team honoree by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  He also picked up a first team All-Virginia honor from the Virginia Sports Information Directors. It is VWC's 15th first team VaSID honor since 2001.

Fisher (Virginia Beach/Landstown), a freshman midfielder, has been tagged as Virginia's Rookie of the Year by the VaSID, marking him as only the second Marlin student-athlete to ever receive the award.  The first was Brandon Massie in 2006.

Virginia Wesleyan finished the 2013 season with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship and the 17th NCAA tournament berth for the men's soccer program.  The Marlins posted a final 16-5-1 record with a team that out-goaled opponents 49-27 and outscored them overall 133-73.  Cornell and Fisher were catalysts in that offensive production.

Cornell recorded career-best totals across the board with a team-leading 11 goals, seven assists, and 29 points.  He scored solo goals in 11 different games, including game-winners against Guilford College (1-0) and in VWC's conference championship win over Randolph College (2-1).

Fisher emerged as the highest scoring rookie since 1994, netting nine goals and an assist for 19 points.  Like Cornell, he provided the Marlins with game-winning goals against Christopher Newport University (3-2), then-undefeated Washington and Lee University (1-0), Lynchburg College (1-0), and Bridgewater College (2-1).

The awards add to honors for Cornell and Fisher.  Cornell was honored earlier as a first team All-ODAC honoree, while Fisher was named the conference's Rookie of the Year.
