Macon Pulls Away from Marlins, 12-6

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team started out strong, but Randolph-Macon rallied, ultimately pulling away from the Marlins, 12-6, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday night.

The Marlins scored just 15 seconds into the game when Dante Castillo won the opening face-off and found Joe Couture for the 1-0 lead. Virginia Wesleyan posted another goal just 14 seconds later when Justin Metzger found Eddie Desiderio, again off another face-off victory.

Randolph-Macon rallied from the 2-0 deficit, scoring seven of the next eight goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Marlins to just one goal in the final 29:31 of the first half.

Miles Muncie, Tait Buttrey, and Colin Disesa scored goals in the first to help the R-MC cause, giving the guests a 3-2 lead with 4:58 to play in the quarter.

Matt Baldwin hit Desiderio for his second goal of the quarter at the 3:04 mark, the last time the game would be tied before the Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead for good.

Leading just 6-3, Coleman Adams scored for Randolph-Macon with six seconds remaining in the second to swing momentum to the guests at the halftime break.

The Marlins took advantage of a non-releasable penalty midway through the third quarter to cut into the deficit. Cory Hilliard found Baldwin to make it 7-4 before Baldwin capitalized again just 36 seconds later off a Couture assist.

Randolph-Macon's defense locked VWC down once back at full strength, holding the hosts to just an Andre Brummitt fourth-quarter score the remainder of the way.

Miles Muncie added two second-half goals to give him five for the game. Sam Mayer extended his team lead with three assists for Randolph-Macon (8-7/4-3) while Brian Davies made 13 saves.

Baldwin finished with two goals and an assist while Desiderio added a pair of goals.
