Marlins Fall in ODAC Matchup with Shenandoah
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team fell 15-8 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup with Shenandoah University on Saturday.
Shenandoah responded 10 seconds later when Stephen LaTona quickly found the ball in his stick out of the face-off, ripping a shot to tie the contest.
The Hornets took a 2-1 lead 34 seconds later when Tilghman Sanders scored a man-up goal before Nick Zepko knotted the contest up against with 3:15 to play in the first.
Shenandoah went on a 5-1 run after that mark that carried through the first half to give the guests a 7-3 edge at the break.
The Marlins came out strong again in the third quarter as Andrew Johnson scored less than four minutes into the third quarter to cut the lead to 7-4 and put the Marlins within striking distance.
Shenandoah quelled any dreams of a Marlin comeback midway through the third when Mitchell Fleming found LaTona to start a 7-0 Hornet run that saw the guests take a 14-4 lead with 11:37 left in the game.
LaTona had seven goals in the game for Shenandoah (8-4/3-2), making him Shenandoah's all-time leading goal scorer.
The Marlins held the Hornets to just two goals in the fourth quarter while scoring four on the offensive end, but could not overcome the 10-goal deficit.
Ryan Schott finished with three goals and an assist while Sanders posted eight points on two goals and six assists.
Shenandoah capitalized on all three man-up opportunities, also controlling the point of attack after winning 15 of 25 face-offs.
Baldwin led the Marlins with four points on two goals and two assists to go with two goals from Zepko and one goal and two assists for Joe Couture.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-8/0-4) will host Southern Virginia University (4-8) for a non-conference game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
