Currier sets VWC's point scoring record in win over Randolph
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A 7-0 scoring run by Virginia Wesleyan College's high-powered offense propelled the Marlins to a 17-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host WildCats of Randolph College on Wednesday.
Sophomore Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-Hill Academy) and senior Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) accounted for the first three goals in that scoring surge for Virginia Wesleyan (9-3, 4-2 ODAC) and finished the game with record-setting numbers.
Currier scored four goals and recorded five assists, increasing his season point total to 80, breaking the VWC record of 74 points that he set last season. Pappas also scored four goals and recorded two assists to raise his season point total to 68, tying his career-high set last season.
Currier and Pappas sparked the Marlins to a 7-2 halftime lead, which was extended to 10-2 in the first two minutes of the third quarter. Junior Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), and Pappas scored the early goals for VWC before Colton Wood (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) put Randolph back on the scoring board.
But, the Marlins returned to scoring quickly and reeled off four straight goals to record VWC's largest lead at 14-3 with 4:28 remaining to be played in the third quarter. Andre Brummitt (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie North County), Jake Schulz (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oake), Currier, and Pappas scored the goals in that run.
Brummitt, Roth, and Moran scored two goals each for the Marlins. Moran also recorded two assists, raising his season point toal to 40.
Andrew Risse (Annandale/Annandale) and Wood led Randolph (4-9, 0-6 ODAC) with three goals each.
Cam Davis (Gibsonville, N.C./Western Alamance) played in front of the goal for Randolph and recorded 17 saves.
