VIRGINIA BEACH -- When Virginia Wesleyan College's Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored off an assist from Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) at the 3:07 mark of the first quarter to tie the score at three-all, it appeared as through the Marlins and Christopher Newport University's Captains would produce an even battle to the final horn.
But, CNU had other ideas. The Captains combined aggressive defensive play with a quick offense to pin a stunning 18-9 loss on the Marlins on Foster Field at the Trinder Center on Wednesday. The win was only the second for CNU in the eight-game series with Virginia Wesleyan which began in 2007.
The non-conference contest remained close into the opening minutes of the second quarter when Currier scored off an assist by Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) to pull within a 5-4 score with 11:13 remaining before halftime. That's as close as it would get the rest of the way however, as the Captains (5-1) outscored Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 to open up a 10-6 lead at halftime. Randy Foster (Forrest Hill, Md./North Hartford) scored twice for CNU in the run.
Matters did not improve for Virginia Wesleyan (3-1) after the halftime break as the Captains scored the first three goals of the third quarter, including two by John Thompson (Richmond/Collegiate) to open up a 13-6 lead.
Pappas scored back-to-back goals, both assisted by Currier, to cut the gap to 13-8, but it would not get closer after that.
Pappas led VWC scoring with four goals, followed by Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Currier with two each. Currier recorded a game-high four assists.
Brooks Billings (Street, Md./North Harford), Adam Abbate (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), and Foster all scored three goals each for CNU.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again Saturday, March 15, at Shenandoah University at 1 p.m.
