Moran scores 7, Pappas adds 6 as Virginia Wesleyan rolls at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Mike Moran scored a career-high seven goals and Nick Pappas added a season-high six goals to lead the Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team to a 23-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host Eagles of Bridgewater College on Saturday.
Moran (Woowich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored once in the first quarter, three times in the second, once in the third, and twice in the fourth to help carry the Marlins to the win that improved VWC's overall record to 8-5. The Marlins are now 4-3 in the league. Bridgewater dropped to 5-9 overall and to 1-7 in the ODAC.
Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River), who increased his team-leading goal total to 37, tallied twice in the first quarter as VWC opened up a 6-3 lead. He did not score in the second quarter, but the Mrlins used goals by Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford), Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River),Spencer McCready (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Moran to lead 12-5 at halftime.
Pappas added two more goals in the third quarter as the lead expanded to 16-9, and added two more goals in the fourth.
Nine Marlins overall scored at least one goal each, including two each from Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County), Papetti and Gunn. Rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) added four more assists to his VWC rookie record total, which is now 31. Senior Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Pappas added two assists each.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Bridgewater 51-30, including 20-6 in the first quarter. The Marlins also scooped up 60 ground balls, tying the sixth highest single-game total in VWC history. Sophomore Sam Limpert (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) led that effort with eight grounders, followed by Connors with seven.
VWC used three goalies, starting with senior Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), who recorded seven saves in 55+ minutes. Rookies Jason Conner (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) and Sean Galloway (Shady Side, Md./Southern) also logged time protecting the goal. Conner finished with two saves and Galloway added one.
Derrick Daniels (Bear, Del./Delaware Military Academy) led Bridgewater scoring with three goals. Goalie Andrew Buss (Severna Mark, Md./Archbishop Spalding) played 56+ minutes and recorded 13 saves. Shane Trost (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) finished in goal for the Eagles.
Virginia Wesleyan closes the home portion of the regular-season schedule on Wednesday, April 24, hosting Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets in ODAC competition beginning at 7 p.m.
