Sewanee hands Virginia Wesleyan first loss
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- After playing the University of the South (Sewanee) to a 6-5 game at halftime, scoring cooled off for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team in a non-conference game at St. Anne's Belfield School.
While the Marlns scored solo goals in the third and fourth periods, the Tigers started to pull away with three goals in the third and added four in the fourth to post a 13-7 victory. It was also the first loss of the season for Virginia Wesleyan (3-1).
Sewanee (4-1) finished with advantages in most statistical categories, including 51-31 in shots and 38-20 in ground balls. The Tigers finished with a 13-11 edge in face-off wins, both teams finished with 12 clears, and Virginia Wesleyan produced a 16-11 advantage in saves.
Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) led Virginia Wesleyan scoring with three goals, Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) added two, and Mike Moran (Woolrich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) scored one goal each.
Senior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) recorded seven saves in the second period and finished with a game-high 16. Sam Limpert (Magnola, Del./Ceasar Rodney) came up with 10 face-off wins and led the Marlins with five ground balls.
Michael Morris (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) led Sewanee with five goals. Davis Brown (Norcross, Ga./Wesleyan School) added four.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, March 12, hosting the Bombers (2-0) of New York's Ithaca College at 7 p.m. on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
