Marlins open 2013 season with 17-5 victory over Ferrum

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game and opened up a 7-1 lead en route to a 17-5 victory over Ferrum College in the Marlins' season opener on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River), Mike Moran (Woowich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County)scored the opening goals for the Marlins who led 8-3 at halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan pulled away for good in the third period, scoring six unanswered goal, led by Pappas with three.  The Marlins scored nine consecutive goals extending from the end of the second period through the start of the fourth.  Sophomore John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Moran scored the first two goals of the final period for the Marlins.

Seven Marlins scored, led by Pappas with five goals.  Moran added three, rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario / Holy Cross/The Hill Academy) tallied three and Connors added two.

Senior goalkeeper Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) turned in a solid effort in goal for the Marlins recording 17 saves.  Virginia Wesleyan out-shot the Panthers 57-36, including 22-13 in the second period. 

Five players scored solo goals for the Panthers (0-2).  Ferrum goalie Josh Liptak (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) recorded 15 saves.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 23, hosting Greensboro College in a non-conference game starting at 1 p.m. at the Trinder Center.
