HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Time befriended the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team Wednesday as the game clock ran out on Virginia Wesleyan College's attempt to tie the game.
After a turnover by the Tigers (7-5, 4-2 ODAC), the Marlins (8-5, 2-3) called for time with 15 seconds on the clock. With play back on the Marlins worked the ball toward the goal, but a last-second shot was wide, preserving an 8-7 win for the host team.
Virginia Wesleyan took control early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River), Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), and Andrew Adamson (Marriottsville, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph), all in the first eight minutes of competition. Ryan McArthur (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) assisted on the first goal and Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph) recorded an assist on the third goal.
H-SC came back quickly however, scoring two goals within 30 seconds, both by Ryan Martin, to cut into the VWC lead. The Tigers continued to score in the second quarter, tacking on goals from Nate Norbo (Waterford, Va./Loudon Valley) and Martin to move in front 4-3. But, the teams went to halftime with a 4-all tie as Puls scored for VWC with 2:47 remaining in the half.
The teams traded goals early in the third quarter, before H-SC found a cushion to ride the rest of the game. Micah Keller (Richmond, Va./Christchurch) and Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach/Cape Henry) scored back-to-back goals to give the Ters a 7-5 lead, their largest of the game.
But, Virginia Wesleyan kept the pressure on, scoring two of the game's final three goals.
Puls topped VWC scoring with three goals, while Adamson scored two. Martin led H-SC with three goals.
VWC junior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) came through for 13 saves for the Marlins. H-SC goalie Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) finished with eight.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, April 14, playing at Washington and Lee University at 1 p.m. in another ODAC game.
