Nycz, Moran combine for seven goals to lead VWC to win at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. -- Adam Nycz and Mike Moran combined for seven goals and four assists Saturday to guide Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 non-conference victory over the host Panthers of Ferrum College.

Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), a senior, led the effort with four goals and three assists, while rookie Moran (Woolrich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) added a career-high three goals and one assist.

Ferrum (6-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Virginia Wesleyan (8-4) came back strong in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead on consecutive goals from Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph), and Nycz.

Andrew Senft (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) scored to push the host team back in front by a goal, but Moran tied the game for the Marlins and consecutive goals by Nycz and Kyle Wright (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) gave Virginia Wesleyan the lead for good.

Virginia Wesleyan led 7-5 at the half and pushed out to a 10-6 lead by the end of the third period.  A goal by Moran and two by Nycz in the fourth period provided the Marlins with another 3-1 scoring cushion to secure the win.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 45-31 advantage in shots and a 38-32 edge in ground balls. The Marlins also won 15 of 23 face offs, led by Connors' 7-of-11 showing.

In addition to the scoring by Nycz and Moran, Puls and Wright finished with two goals each for the Marlins.  Nick Pappas and Puls also recorded a pair of assists each.

Junior Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) started in goal for the Marlins and produced 13 saves.  Quinn Magner (Chevy Chase, Md./Blue Ridge, Va.) also protected the goal for VWC and had one save. Ferrum goalie Damian Pulos (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) recorded 20 saves for the Panthers who were led in scoring by Senft with three goals.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, April 11, playing at 4 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at Hampden-Sydney College.
