Marlins open ODAC golf tourney in eighth place

CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- All five Virginia Wesleyan College golfers recorded scores within five strokes of each other during the opening round of the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship tournament at the Bay Creek Resort and Lodge.

Competing in Sunday's cold, windy weather on the Palmer Course, the Marlins combined for a score of 347 to place eighth in a field of 10 teams.

Sophomore Kevin Wolfe (Chesapeake/Indian River) led the Marlins with an 85, tying him for 27th place in the field of 50 golfers.  Rookie John Dozier (Manot Sabot/Mills E. Godwin) was a stroke behind at 86 and sophomore Troy Katzer Jr. (Bay City, Texas/Bay City) followed with an 87. Junior Alexi O'Hearn (Norfolk/Maury) carded an 89 and senior Ryan Matalon (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) rounded out the VWC first-day scores with a 90.

Tournament competition continues on Monday, April 22 and Tuesday, April 23 at Bay Creek.
