Marlins place 16th in Tom Kinder Memorial
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Improvement was key word for the Virginia Wesleyan College golf team on the final day of the Tom Kinder Memorial tournament.
Three of five Marlin golfers produced improved scores on the Lakeview golf course, where rookieJohn Dozier III (Manakin-Sabot/Mills E. Godwin) led VWC with a final score of 145. That placed him ninth in the field of 85 golfers.
Sophomore Troy Katzer Jr. (Bay City, Texas/Bay City) shot a 79 on the second day, six strokes better than his first round. He finished with a 164. Sophomore Kevin Wolfe (Chesapeake/Indian River) and senior Ryan Matalon (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) also cut strokes as Wolfe scored an 83 the second day and Matalon an 82. Wolfe improved by three strokes in the opening round and Matalon was five strokes better. Both golfers finished with a score of 169.
Rookie Patrick Raschko (Bellevue, Wash./Sammamish) carded an 84 in the first round and finished with a total of 173,
Virginia Intermont's Trevor Banks took medalist honors with a 134, six strokes better than runner-up Whit Brown of Milligan College. Milligan took team honors with a 579, four strokes better than runner-up Bridgewater College. VWC finished with a 644 and placed 16th among 18 teams.
The Marlins return to competition on Monday, Sept. 24, in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at the Manor in Farmville.
