Valianos five strokes off lead in H-SC Invitational
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore Chris Valianos has played his way into the leaders' ranks after the first day of competition in the Hampden-Sydney College Invitational.
Competing at The Manor, a par 72, 6,827 yard course, Valianos (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) has opened with a 73, just five strokes behind the current leader, H-SC's Rick O'Connell (Goochland, Va./Goochland). Valianos is currently in fourth place, tied with two other golfers.
The day was not as giving for the remainder of the Virginia Wesleyan team however, as the Marlins carded a 331 and are currently 10th in the 11 team field. H-SC leads with a 292, followed by Averett University with a 304.
Senior Adam Sauls (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Christian) opened with an 85 for the Marlins, followed by rookie Steve Claffy (Virginia Beach/Kempsville) with an 86, rookie Troy Katzer (Bay City, Texas/Bay City) with an 87, and senior Mitch Green (Cordova, Md./St. Michael's) with an 89.
Competition in the tournament continues on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
