Virginia Wesleyan's next NCAA foe is Whitworth

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's basketball Marlins will face Washington's Whitworth College in NCAA tournament action at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

That game will be played on Friday, March 9, at a time to be determined.

Virginia Wesleyan and Whitworth both carry 26-3 records into the sectional event, which includes Wheaton College of Illinois (26-3) and host Whitewater (25-4).  The winner of the sectional advances to the championship round in the Civic Center in Salem, Va.

The VWC-Whitworth game features two of the highest scoring offenses in the nation.  Virginia Wesleyan averages 80.5 points per game, led by four double figure scorers in D.J. Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) at 16.2 points per game, Donald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac) at 13.8, Chris Astorga (Suffolk, Va/Virginia Beach Cape Henry Collegiate) at 14.9, and Chris Teasley (Newport News, Menchville) at 10.9.

Whitworth boasts three double figure scorers in Idris Lasisi (Leuven, Belgium/North Idaho), who averages 17.0 points per game, Felix Freidt (Düsseldorf, Germany/Humboldt-Gymnasium) at 16.5, and Wade Gebbers (Brewster, Wash./Brewster) at 12.8, who help the Pirates score 78.3 points per outing.

Whitworth will enter the game riding a 13-game winning streak, while VWC enters riding an eight-game winning streak. The teams have one common opponent in Trinity University of Texas. Whitworth beat Trinity in an NCAA second round game 64-53. Virginia Wesleyan rolled past Trinity 84-54 earlier this season.
