Three wins in a row for field hockey Marlins with 6-0 decision against Sweet Briar

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A winning streak continues for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team.

Six different Marlins directed the ball into the cage on Wednesday, helping to guide VWC to a 6-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Vixens of Sweet Briar College on Marlins Field.  The victory was the third straight for the Marlins, who are now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Junior Courtney Copeland (Yorktown/Tabb) started the scoring for VWC, hitting a shot just 1:31 into the competition.  Her effort was set up by a pass from sophomore Tanya Puccio (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark).  Five minutes later Puccio scored her own goal, assisted by junior Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Pa./Fairless Hills Pennsbury).

The Marlins went on to open up a 4-0 lead by halftime as sophomore Skyler Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and seniorAmelia Goebel (Virginia Beach/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) added scores in the late minutes of the half.  Weaver's shot was an unassisted effort from the left and Goebel's score was recorded on a penalty stroke.

VWC's scoring started quickly in the second half when rookie Sam Jackson (Manassas/Osbourn) connected for a goal just 41 seconds into the competition.  Eight minutes later senior Courtney Pollard (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) scored the final goal for VWC.  Both second half goals were assisted by Copeland.

VWC dominated the action, forcing Sweet Briar into a defensive game most of the afternoon. The Marlins finished with a 28-3 advantage in shots and a 20-3 advantage in corners.

Kirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) started in goal for the Marlins and gave way to Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) for the second half.  Brooke Scott (Kemah, Texas/Episcopal) played in goal all the way for Sweet Briar and recorded 14 saves.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Sept. 22, traveling to Bridgewater to face the Eagles (3-3) of Bridgewater College in an ODAC game beginning at 4 p.m.
