National academic award for Marlin field hockey

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey team has been honored with an NCAA Division III National Academic Team Award for the 2010 season.

A total of 78 teams across the nation earned the awards, presented by Gladiator and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.  It is the second time VWC has earned the award and the first since 2006. Teams must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to receive the award.

Virginia Wesleyan's Marlins compiled a combined 3.1176 GPA during the fall of 2010, led by rookies Kirsten Olson (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County), who compiled a 4.00 as a business major, Kelly Mullahy (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), who posted a 3.87 GPA, and Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Pa./Fairless Hills Pennsbury), who recorded a 3.71 grade point average as a biology major.  Sophomore Taylor Harding (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate)contribued to the overall GPA with a 3.58, earning her a third Dean's List honor, and junior Courtney Eisert (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield), a recreation and leisure major, added a 4.00 and earned her fifth Dean's List honor.

VWC was one of four Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams to receive the award. The others were Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University and Washington & Lee University.  Massachusetts' Worcester State College recorded the highest team GPA for the season at 3.57.
