Pitching carries Marlins to Saturday Sweep

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team received a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep Lynchburg College in ODAC play on Saturday.

Game 1: 5-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory

The Marlins  scored three early runs to defeat Lynchburg in the first game.

VWC struck for a line run in the second inning when Taylor Erby struck for a solo homer.

The Marlins plated two more in the third on RBI singles by Randy Neisz and Deon Hammond.

Patrick Monteverde (5-1) controlled the Hornets on the mound, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out five in six innings. Chance Pauley picked up his first save with three innings of shutout relief.

Game 2: 8-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory

Lynchburg scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Marlins scored the final eight runs to win 8-1 in the nightcap.

Nick Bay (4-2) controlled the Hornet offense, throwing a complete game while striking out 10. He surrendered just seven hits and walked three.

Luke Rodgers homered in the first to take the early lead.

The Marlins took the lead in the third when Justin Erby connected on a triple to drive in two. VWC tallied another run in the fourth before posting two in the fifth, highlighted by a Corey King home run.

Virginia Wesleyan (18-14/9-6) travels to Methodist University for a 5 p.m. non-conference tilt on Wednesday.
