Ferrum takes two from Virginia Wesleyan

FERRUM, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's baseball Marlins overcame a three-run deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth inning against the host Panthers of Ferrum College.

But, the 3-3 tie lasted only briefly Friday, as Ferrum scored a solo run in the bottom of the same inning to pull out a 4-3 non-conference victory.  The Panthers kept things rolling in the second game, out-hitting Virginia Wesleyan 14-3 en route to a 12-0 win for the sweep.

Ferrum (13-5) seemed to have things under control in the first game with a 3-0 lead through five innings, before Virginia Wesleyan (2-7) came to life in the top of the sixth.  Pike Brynildsen (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) led off and reached base on error and Josh Horn (Virginia Beach/Bayside) followed with a single. Alex Lambert  (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) walked to load the bases, setting things up for Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) who singled to left center to send in a run.  Alex Tucci (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) kept things going when he boarded base on a run-scoring fielder's choice.  Josh Miller (Norfolk, Va./Chesapeake Greenbrier Christian Academy) singled to left for the third run, but it stopped there as Ferrum produced consecutive outs to end the big inning.

Ferrum wasted no time in ending the tie in the bottom of the inning however, as Daniel Alvarez (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) blasted a solo home run that turned out to be the game winner.

Brynildsen, Sircacusa and Miller all belted two hits each for the Marlins.  VWC worked three pitchers, starting with Brooks Kirby (Warwickshire, United Kingdom/Cobham School) who faced 22 batters and allowed three runs and three earned runs. He struck out two batters.

Ferrum dominated the second game from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding at least one run in each of the next five innings en route to the 10-0 win.

VWC posted only three singles in the game, with Brynildsen claiming two.  Seven Marlins pitched in the contest.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, March 10, playing an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bridgewater College beginning at noon.
